What is an OLT and what is its purpose?

Key Functions and Purposes of an OLT:

1. Data Transmission and Reception:

   • Downstream Transmission: The OLT sends data from the central office to the Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at the customer's premises.
   • Upstream Reception: It receives data transmitted by the ONUs/ONTs from the end-users.

2. Signal Conversion:

   • The OLT converts electrical signals used in the central office into optical signals for transmission over the fiber-optic network and vice versa.

3. Traffic Management:

   • It allocates bandwidth to different end-users, ensuring efficient data flow and minimizing congestion.
   • It implements Quality of Service (QoS) policies to prioritize certain types of traffic, such as voice or video.

4. Network Monitoring and Management:

   • The OLT monitors the network's performance and status, detecting and diagnosing faults or issues in the network.
   • It provides management interfaces for network administrators to configure and control the network.

5. Security:

   • It helps in securing the network by implementing encryption and other security protocols to protect data transmission from unauthorized access.
